Waterworld Discovered in Space

Observations by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have come up with a new class of planet, a waterworld enshrouded by a thick, steamy atmosphere. It's smaller than Uranus but larger than Earth.

Zachory Berta of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and colleagues made the observations of the planet GJ1214b.

"GJ1214b is like no planet we know of," Berta said. "A huge fraction of its mass is made up of water."

The ground-based MEarth Project, led by CfA's David Charbonneau, discovered GJ1214b in 2009. This super-Earth is about 2.7 times Earth's diameter and weighs almost seven times as much. It orbits a red-dwarf star every 38 hours at a distance of 1.3 million miles, giving it an estimated temperature of 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Changes in the Earths rotation

The moving of tectonic plates can cause the Earths rotation to change! On December 26, 2004 an earthquake destroyed areas around the Indian Ocean, it was caused by the tectonic plates shifting 15 meters apart in the Indian Ocean. It caused the rotation of the Earth to speed up 2.6 microseconds faster, which isn't that big of a difference. When earthquakes like that happen they cause the earth to close in a little, making it a tiny bit smaller, which causes the Earth to speed up and to wobble more known as the Chandler Wobble. The Earthquake had more energy than a million atomic bombs and only moved it 20 microseconds faster.

Scientist found in 2005 that Neptune had seasons! Neptune entered Spring in 1976 and just got into summer in 2005. They discovered this by looking at pictures of Neptune and noticing that the rings of clouds were getting brighter, it works just as it does on Earth, they are both tilted on their axis which causes seasons because of the direction towards the Sun. It took so long because it takes Neptune to rotate around the Sun in 165 earth years. 

Big Bang!

 Edwin Hubble making an observation that the universe was expanding created the . The reason why it is so important is because it gives us the information on how the universe was made. The Big Bang is the theory that there was a ball of matter that exploded and flew everywhere, the matter that flew everywhere was a dust or as Stephen Hawking put it "a fog of energy". It was the size of an atom and it went to the size of an orange in less than a trillionth of a second. The Big Bang theory was discovered in 1929.
